Scientists’ egos are key barrier to progress, says Covid vaccine pioneer | Coronavirus | The Guardian
This woman is an inspiration!! Prof Katalin Kariko.
Did and continues to do science for the sake of discovery and impact....I'm glad she's finally getting the recognition and accolades she deserves. Hers is a story of hardwork, resilience, perseverance, the love of science and belief in ideas!
Unfortunately academia often distracts one by emphasizing titles, boxes to be ticked, and we often get caught up in succeeding for the wrong reasons. If deemed unsuccessful, support can be cut off and progress impeded. Something needs to change in a world where the status quo is often the expectation of fast returns without considering potential for enhanced long-term gain and greater impact on society where scientists are supported for longer periods of time.
What's fascinating about this story is that Katalin Karinko never gave up on her passion for science in such a world.
Let's all remember why we fell in love with science and pursued it passionately in the first place!
I for one wake up happy everyday, aware of the priviledge to do what I love, and the determination to use that for the good of society.
Here's to the love of Science, Discovery and its Immense Potential for Impact !! 🙌
Noteworthy quotes:
“If so many people who are in a certain field would come together in a room and forget their names, their egos, their titles, and just think, they would come up with so many solutions for so many things, but all these titles and whatever get in the way”
“I always thought who cares? In 100 years nobody will know my name. But titles, promotions, older men, power, it all gets in the way,” she said. It is not exclusively men that prioritise power over progress, she concedes, but “they have had more time to practise wielding power”.
